Guest Blog Post: Mommy by the River
On Thursday, March 13, 2014–the Elgin School District U-46 Planetarium is hosting a Public Sky Show (i.e., it’s open to the public). Plus, it’s CHEAP! And if they ask who sent you, tell them The Mommy did!
Date: Thursday, March 13, 2014
Event: Observatory/Planetarium Sky Shows at the Elgin School District U-46 Planetarium
Time: There are two shows: First show is 4:30 p.m. to 5:15 p.m.; Second show is 6:15 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Please note that doors open 30 minutes prior for a self-guided tour of the building (optional).
Details: This is a “full dome” presentation (i.e., look up at the ceiling, which is a dome to see the show). The theme is “Celebrating 50 Years Under the Stars.” Learn about the history of the building and receive a live tutorial on using a star map or “planisphere.”
Age: Appropriate for kids age 8+ with caregiver
Important: I was told there is limited seating and a line forms outside of the building until the doors open, so it is wise to dress for the weather and get there early so you don’t miss out. Also note where to park in this post!
Cost: The shows are $3 per person or a maximum of $10 per family (CHEAP!). But please note: no credit cards (cash only!) The nice teacher I spoke to stressed that it is important to be polite and keep the little ones quiet so as not to disturb the other folks, and that also means no texting and looking at glowing smart phones. In other words, turn off your phones for an hour. You will survive!
Located: Elgin School District U-46 Planetarium, 312 Watch St., Elgin (corner of Watch St. & Raymond St.)
Parking: There is a FREE parking lot at National & Raymond–no parking on Watch St. or private lots.
More information: Web site (Look at the drop downs–go to “District Information;” Once you click on it, you’ll see Observatory/Planetarium. Click on it and then hit the UPCOMING EVENTS tab there, and you can download flyers on each of the shows and read more complete information on them.) You can also call (847) 888-5324 for more information.
