The New Girl’s Guide: 12 Days of Christmas: Two Turtle Doves and 3 French Hens
According to the song “12 Days of Christmas,” by the second day, I should be handing you over two turtle doves and a partridge in a pear tree. These do sound like unusual gifts, to say the least. I can definitely say I have never received any poultry or fruit trees as Christmas gifts and I’m guessing you haven’t either. That is why I am on the hunt for practical gifts that you actually do want for Christmas from local shops!
My second day of these “12 Days of Christmas” leads us to The Fox and the Filly and Swell Gallery. I decided that Small Business Saturday was the best day to go and explore the deals and walk off some of the Thanksgiving gut I had acquired. My first stop was The Fox and the Filly on 125 W Main St, West Dundee, Illinois. If you or your loved ones like Boho Chic with some Southwestern inspiration, this is the place to be! They have everything from everyday attire to cute cocktail dresses and accessories. They also have a ton of handmade jewelry that I instantly knew my mom would love. I am a huge fan of Boho Chic items, meaning a play on vintage styles in fashion with the intent to bring back vintage styles for the modern era. Boho Chic usually combines organic, colorful, detailed, folk-inspired pieces with simple, modern pieces. The Fox and Filly delivered! They have beautiful sweaters, cute printed leggings, scarves, and jewelry all reasonably priced. There were so many things that I knew I would love to get there for myself, but I stayed strong and got my mom her present. I also got a “Shop Small Saturday” sticker to commemorate the experience. The Fox and the Filly’s hours are open Monday– Friday: 11 am- 6 pm, Saturday: 10 am- 5 pm, and Sunday: 12 pm- 4 pm.
As I was leaving The Fox and the Filly, I saw the sign for Swell Gallery. I had never been to Swell but I saw that it was a Holiday Arts, Crafts, and Vintage Market so of course, I had to check it out. It was well..swell! Everything is made by local artists! So you’re not only supporting a small business, but you’re helping artists do their craft and continue to do what they love. Swell had a ton of different objects that could easily be gifts. They had wooden ornaments, mittens, sport themed home decor items, headbands, candles, jewelry, and more! Everything is affordable and beautifully made. This time I caved in and treated myself to a candle. It was recycled from an old Vodka bottle and given a new purpose in life as a delicately scented candle, which I love. Swell Gallery is located at 123½ West Main St, West Dundee, Illinois. Find their hours here!
While visions of Shop Small Saturday may be over, it does not mean you can’t still
support small businesses in the days leading up to Christmas. If you don’t know what to get that certain someone, don’t fret. Shop local and find something they will love!
Next week, I will continue counting down my 12 Days of Christmas shopping journey to find local shops with great Christmas gift potential. For now, I will hang my stockings by the chimney with care and visions of sugar plums will dance in my head, with the knowledge that St. Nicholas will soon be here.
